Chevron WP7 Labs will unlock your Windows Phone device for a small fee

Chevron WP7 is probably the best thing that has happened to the Homebrew community (currently in small numbers at XDA). Chevron WP7 enabled users to developer unlock device their device to sideload applications. The idea was nobel. Not everyone could pay $99 to test their application. It was a bit too much. So the team came out with this hack, exploited a void and made a break through. The Chevron WP7 unlocker gave birth to  several other hacks as well, most of them still prominent on first page of Windows Phone XDA thread. Sadly, the unlock couldn't last for long. Microsoft fixed the bug in upcoming update making Chevron WP7 absolutely useless. The developers killed the project. But now the team behind the unlocker along with Microsoft's support are back with Chevron WP7 Labs which was announced in Windows phone dev podcast. More from the blog:

As announced on the Windows Phone Dev Podcast, we will soon be launching an approved Windows Phone unlocking service as part of ChevronWP7 Labs. This will be available to developers across all skill levels and all regions.
The service will require a small fee — currently via PayPal — to offset costs but we assure you it will be more affordable than the App Hub. Those who wish to write and immediately publish apps are recommended to sign up to the App Hub instead.

Right so let's see. To sideload the applications, you have to pay a fees which is unlike the iOS homebrew community where developers ask for absolutely no fees at all. Chevron wp7 initially never asked for fees but now with Microsoft backing (we don't have much detail on how the unlock will be done) they are asking for a small fees to be paid via Paypal which seems a bit odd to me. They have clearly said that it will be less than the App Hub fees, which is $99 so that makes their unlock a bit more tempting. Now the most important question is: Is charging fees for an unlock fair? I am expecting a XDA backlash here.

What's I am intrigued by is the "small fee" - how small would it be? We'll keep you updated.
