TrueCaller Adding Realtime Caller ID Support With Mango

You know about True Caller, right ? That cool app which allows you to look up phone numbers from anywhere in the world, is on Windows Phone 7. You can search for a number and the app returns the name and address(when available) as results. You can search international numbers as well by changing your country.

The app is about to get even more awesome. Bringing it on par with its counterparts on other platforms, it will soon add the realtime caller ID feature. We contacted the devs, and they told us with Mango, it will be possible to access the contacts API and add realtime functionality to the app.

4Lyrics app does music playback & automatically syncs lyrics with music on your Windows Phone device

I have been waiting for an application that could play music and show me synchronised lyrics on my Windows Phone device. I had this application caled Lyrics which fetched lyrics from some lyrics database online but it wasn't synchronized with music so it wasn't really useful, I could have used web browser instead. 4Lyrics is just what I wanted. It's not just an application which syncs lyrics with music but it also searches for singers, albums, title of the tracks and random reproduction. The music playback is powered by native Zune client so your music plays in the background.

You can also chose to translate lyrics in many of the available languages in the Settings options ( powered by Microsoft translator ). If you think lyrics is broken - you can fix it yourself. I still somehow miss Tune Wiki, iOS app, lyrics sync experience - the Karaoke experience as they call it. Highlights the words as they come out - can't really describe it due to vocabulary limitations but you probably get the idea if you have used it.

The interface is clean and will definitely replace Zune hub as my default music playback destination. The application is available for 0.99 $ - definitely a value for money. Hit the Zune download link.

Microsoft Releases Developer Tool To Port iOS Applications To Windows Phone

There's no doubt that Apple currently leads the appstore race, atleast in terms of numbers, but Microsoft seems to be determined to do everything they can to woo developers for their WP7 platform. They have announced an API mapping tool : iPhone/iOS to Windows Phone API mapping tool.

Announced on the Windows Phone Developer blog, the tool is described as a sort of translation dictionary for quickly porting snippets of iOS code to C# equivalents.

With this tool, iPhone developers can grab their apps, pick out the iOS API calls, and quickly look up the equivalent classes, methods and notification events in WP7. A developer can search a given iOS API call and find the equivalent WP7 along with C# sample codes and API documentations for both platforms.
For the current version, three types of APIs are supported : Network / Internet, User Interface and Data Management. Though they do not plan to provide mapping for all the APIs that iOS has, they do plan to improve and expand the scope in later versions.
Microsoft has also published a 90-page+ whitepaper titled "Windows Phone 7 Guide for iPhone Application Developers". Microsoft has also given devs an option to suggest which APIs they would like mapped and they have also begun a series of "developer stories" in which devs share their experiences and reason for porting apps to Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft is definitely following its "Developers! Developers! Developers!" motto and the upcoming Nokia-Microsoft dev engagement initiatives are only going to boost developer interest in Windows Phone. You can get the tool, whitepaper and other resources at the source link.

Zune services to be renamed ' Xbox Live Music ' ?

An anonymous tipper sent us a link which turned out to be job posting for ' Xbox live Music Marketplace ' which is totally unheard of.

The listing is embedded below :
Job Category: Services & Consulting
Location: United States, WA, Redmond
Job ID: 754083
Division: Interactive Entertainment Business
Are you interested in working in one of the most dynamic areas of the digital entertainment industry? Are you ready to deliver the content and experiences that customers want? Is this the end of Zune or just an extension of current Xbox services  ? Zune isn't even close to being s popular as the Xbox Live services. Xbox live has a huge fanbase while Zune being exceptionally good isn't really catching up with users. Will the renaming of service cause a positive impact ? Will update as soon as we get more information on this.

Stephen Elop talks about Possibility of releasing Nokia WP7 device in Q4 2011, adopting Windows for tablets & more(Video)

Stephen Elop in a TV interview to a Finnish channel today made some interesting points. He talked about the recent decision to outsource all Symbian devlopment related activity to Accenture, about brain drain from nokia, concern that Nokia will become just another hardware manufacturer, Finland specific issues and most importantly about the Nokia Windows Phone 7 device and Windows based tablet possibility.

Watch the interview below :

The interview is definitely worth watching. Stephen Elop mentioned that they are working on a tablet strategy and is ' most important ' for Nokia in the coming future. He hasn't denied rumor that Nokia's next tablet might just be a Windows based tablet ( Windows 8 or Windows Phone 7 ? ) or probably a Meego tablet too. After watching so many Stephen Elop interviews, I can tell you that Nokia is working really hard to bring a Nokia WP7 device in Q4 2011. Probably just before Christmas, but they are definitely going to pleasantly surprise you. And w.r.t. to the tablet strategy, Microsoft has never promoted WP7 for tablets which is why we have never seen one in a tablet before. So is Nokia building a Windows 8 tablet but how long do they have to wait for that ? I don't think they can afford wasting time now. We will find that out next year.

A Microsoft Case Study on Windows Phone 7 adoption by an enterprise (Video)

We all are pretty much familiar of how consumers ( which are you and me ) respond to WP7 but we tend to forget how big and important the enterprise segment is for Microsoft. Now with Office  / Sharepoint integration in Windows Phone 7 - they have covered the needs of the enterprise user. But I personally have not come across a feedback article from an enterprise perspective. I stumbled upon this case study today, show a consultancy company, Slalom Consulting, giving feedback after adopting Windows Phone 7. The case study video is a must watch. It will cover few important questions like - How is enterprise responding to this new platform ? How is it helping companies that are already using various Microsoft services ?

Video description :

With nine offices nationwide, Slalom Consulting provides customers with market-leading technology solutions that help them run their businesses. In 2010, Microsoft honored the company with the Information Worker Solutions Collaboration and Business Intelligence Partner of the Year awards, and with the Microsoft Country Partner of the Year for the United States. In November 2010, the company adopted Windows Phone 7 as its mobile platform. It employs Windows Phone 7 to develop innovative mobile applications using the Microsoft .NET Framework, a programming model and set of application programming interfaces for building applications and services, and Microsoft Silverlight, a development platform for creating engaging user experiences. Slalom benefits from the powerful and easy-to-use development tools and improved productivity with Microsoft Office Mobile software.

Watch the video here : http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000009689
( We are having some serious issues with embedding the video. Silverlight, sigh. )

p.s - if you see the complete video. You will see an iPhone and a Blackberry users both moving to Windows Phone 7. Not bad, eh ?

Windows Phone Mango Update Will Bring Facebook Video Uploads and Places Check-In

The next Windows Phone update, codenamed Mango, just seems to be getting better and better. WMPoweruser is reporting that the Mango will bring the ability to upload videos to Facebook and check-in using Facebook places. It seems the VIP members have known this since MWC earlier this year.
Officially renamed Windows Phone 7.5, Mango seems to be dead set on helping Microsoft surge ahead of other platforms. Microsoft will reveal more consumer features at later dates which will coming, thanks to the 15,000 APIs which will be introduced in WP7.5

TinyGrab for Windows Phone 7 under development, will be available soon.

Good news for TinyGrab users, TinyGrab is coming soon to Windows Phone 7. TinyGrab founder ( @leydon )  tweeted a few moments back that a WP7 application is under development :

@lee_stott We'd never considered @TinyGrab for BlackBerry, it would just be horrible. However we are building a Windows Phone 7 app.

For those who don't know about Tinygrab, it's a ' social ' screenshot sharing service.

TinyGrab 2.0 adds a social element to the sharing on screenshots. With the drag of a image or a push of the button you can send your screenshot to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, WordPress or a whole host of other services; of course that short grab.by URL is still placed into your clipboard for you to paste anywhere as soon as the image is uploaded to our servers.

TinyGrab already has an iOS app, so taking clue from the app - we can tell you that the application will let you use your camera to take a screen grab / photo and upload it to TinyGrab server or just upload your pre existing photos to the server, browse uploaded images, share the image on Facebook, twitter, email or just upload to the FTP. Well these are basic yet crucial features. Can't imagine TinyGrab for WP7 eliminating any one of the feature listed above. Any additional feature will be a bonus - making it more feature rich than the iOS variant.

Isn't it slightly ironic : Screen shot service for a platform that doesn't allow you to take screenshot ?

Appcelerator / IDC Quarterly Mobile Developers survey released, Windows Phone 7 beats Blackberry to third place

Appcelerator and IDC have released their Quarterly  Mobile developers survey report. This report will give you an idea of developer's willingness to work on particular platform, their concerns and faith in the platform.

Here is a quick summary from the website below :

Appcelerator and IDC surveyed 2,760 Appcelerator Titanium developers from April 11-13 on perceptions surrounding mobile OS priorities, feature priorities, and mobile development plans in 2011. The survey reveals that developer momentum is shifting back toward Apple as fragmentation and tepid interest in current Android tablets chip away at Google’s recent momentum gains. The report also reveals the rise of the ‘mobile cloud’, a major trend towards connected mobility that promises to partially address the issue of fragmentation and radically transform the relationship between business and customer.
The Appcelerator-IDC Q2 2011 Mobile Developer Survey Report, taken April 11-13, shows that interest in Android has recently plateaued as concerns around fragmentation and disappointing results from early tablet sales have caused developers to pull back from their previous steadily increasing enthusiasm for Google’s mobile operating system. While this opens the door a crack for new entrants, nearly two-thirds of respondents believe that it is not possible for Microsoft, RIM, HP, and Nokia to reverse momentum relative to Apple and Google. Underscoring the fluidity of the mobile ecosystem and in a peculiar turn of events, recent simultaneous drops in developer interest in Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry OSes move Windows Phone 7 ahead of BlackBerry to claim the third spot in developer interest.

Windows Phone 7 is indeed gaining moment but that didn't come up in the report. There has been a drop in developer's interest for both Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry OS resulting in 7 points drop and 11 points drop for WP7 and blackberry OS respectively giving Microsoft and edge and resulting in WP7 being more preferable ( 29 % - 27 % ) when compared to blackberry OS.

More on this :

Microsoft edges RIM to become the third horse, but there is not much cause for celebration in Redmond as respondents’ interest in Microsoft and RIM dropped substantially compared to last quarter. Microsoft fell seven points, with only 29% of developers saying they are ‘very interested’ in the Windows Phone 7, while BlackBerry phones dropped eleven points to 27%. On the upside, and in part as a result of Microsoft’s partnership announcement with Nokia, Windows Phone 7 interest fell four points less than BlackBerry to make Microsoft the new number three in developer interest behind Apple and Google.

Read the full report here. The report is filled with concerns related to Android fragmentation while iOS and WP7 have managed to escape this demon. Developers though aren't as eager to develop on WP7 when comepared to Android ( because of it's reach of course ) as of now. Here are some key points from the report :

Despite Android’s apparent plateau and potential slight pullback, the road to becoming number two will be long for either Microsoft or RIM. 62% of respondents say it will be impossible for anyone to catch up to market leaders Apple and Google. Beyond market share concerns, however, Microsoft’s biggest problem with developers may simply be available time as noted by the 46% of respondents who indicated “I have my hands full with iOS and/ or Android.” In addition to landing major distribution partnerships and exploiting Android’s fragmentation and security holes, making app migrations from iOS and Android to Windows Phone 7 easy and profitable for developers will be critical for Microsoft.

I'll certainly like to see this report again when Nokia adopts and pushes WP7 to the masses. We'll have a much optimistic picture then. Drop in your views.

Microsoft : Windows Phone 7 devices don't store your location history unlike Android and iPhone

The internet is filled with rumors suggesting that iPhone and Android devices tracking user location via your mobile devices. Imagine somebody following you all the time, it's just these companies are your virtual stalkers that store your location data i.e. tracks you everywhere which is a serious privacy concern. PCMag inquired Microsoft about this issue and they have cleared that Windows Phone 7 devices do not store location history.

Microsoft told PCMag unequivocally that phones running Windows Phone 7 do not store location history. Like most other phones, the platform offers plenty of location-based apps, and those apps require user consent before they begin tracking. Windows Phones also offer the common feature of a "global switch" that lets the user disable all location services, and Microsoft says its "Find My Phone" service keeps only the phone's most recent location.
Well, WP7 users take breath a sigh of relief. At least we aren't being stalked, another reason to migrate to Windows phone platform ? You decide.

p.s -  Steve Jobs has denied that iPhones store location data and has instead accused Android of store location data.. I believe you, Mr. Jobs ;)

Senova Phone Marketplace : Visual Search Engine for Windows Phone 7 Apps

Bored of the default Windows Marketplace ? Want better sorting options ? Wanna try a different, more visual way to discover apps ? Then, Senova Phone Marketplace is what you are looking for.

Though, Microsoft already has it's own visual search for apps in Bing, it has some limitations. Beginning with the basics, Senova offers search with great filtering options. You can filter trails by release date, average user rating, used rating count, publisher, download rank, price and license. There are two views - grid view (default) and graph view. You can sort the apps by the same parameters with which you can filter them. Coming to the apps themselves, Senova displays the app icons (you can zoom in and out) and shows their basic details when clicked on, but you can't compare any two apps. Built in silverlight, the search engine has pretty transitions whenever you search, rearrange or filter the search results. Keep in mind, its just search. You can't see the screenshots or summary. One place where it completely trumps Bing though is the no. Of apps. While Bing Visual Search only displays the top 3000 apps from marketplace, Senova displays all apps from the categories which have most apps in the top 1000(updated weekly). It's a great tool and you should try it atleast once.

Check it out here.

Gowalla client MacroPod for Windows Phone 7 coming soon, first screenshot published !

We have had considerable knowledge (thanks to constant twitter interaction with the developers) about the third party Gowalla app being under development for a few months now. Developers of the third party gowalla app, MacroPod, tweeted that they are under the final ' tweaking ' stage and will hopefully submit the application to marketplace soon.

Here is a screenshot of the application in action :

You can see more screenshots on their Tumblr.

There is still no official Gowalla app on Windows Phone 7 while it's competitor FourSquare has an official app and solid third party clients. The Official gowalla application for WP7 is still under development, according to their twitter page.

The application looks gorgeous, about time we get Gowalla on WP7!

NoDo update causing a touchscreen bug in Windows Phone 7 devices?

Youtube user and Windows Phone 7 app developer kotsoft is reporting some serious issues with the multi touch input on WP7 devices. Watch the video embedded below where he explains the bug in detail :

His application ( Grantophone) utilizes the multi touch input so he is rightly concerned.I couldn't replicate his experience while using the Grantophone application since I could sustain with 3 or 4 multi touch input points. Probably I didn't comprehend the logic behind all this or this is a rare bug,it could even be a hardware related issue!
You can download his TouchTest application and deploy the application to test it out yourself.

IM+ for Windows Phone 7 coming soon, pre-release screenshots published !

One thing that really is a matter of concern for the most number of WP7 users is the lack of multi protocol IM apps on the marketplace. IM+, a popular Multi protocol IM application which is avialable on most of the mobile operating system, announced some time back that they are developing an IM app for Windows Phone 7 which will be released in the month of April. Not much time left for the month of April to end and looks like they will be missing the target release date. The application is still in development but after request from bunch of users, they have published an image showing screenshots of the application on their facebook page :

If you see the screenshot above, you will noticed that the application probably doesn't have live tile support ( which is pretty essential feature IMO ) and you can live chat with multiple users by swiping left or right accross the screen, hopefully. More to come soon, we are hoping to get access to the beta version of the application. Stay tuned.

Nokia, Microsoft finalize Partnership Agreement For Windows Phone 7

About 10 weeks after Nokia and Microsoft announced their partnership, which had fans whooping with joy, the Redmond and Finland based giants have inked their deal in paper today. After the joint announcement, people from both companies have been collaborating intensively and have finalized the deal well ahead of schedule.
Hundreds of employees of both companies are already making joint engineering efforts and working together on the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 phones which are expected to be released as soon as Q1 2012 or possibly late 2011 and porting core Nokia apps to the Wp7 platform. They are also focusing on the ecosystem, with combined efforts for the developer community already begun.

"Our agreement is good for the industry,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “Together, Nokia and Microsoft will innovate with greater speed, and provide enhanced opportunities for consumers and our partners to share in the success of our ecosystem."
The partnership is based around 4 main areas. First is the combination of the various strengths of both companies, Nokia will deliver mapping, navigation and other location based services, while helping in hardware design and development of the WP7 ecosystem. Microsoft will supplement with its expertise in productivity, gaming , social media and help monetize Nokia's location services. Nokia will also get a Nokia-branded application store for Windows Phone 7, while WP7 registration becomes free for Nokia developers. Microsoft's operator billing benefits from Nokia's relationship with carriers in over 36 markets.

Nokia will pay running royalties to Microsoft for its use of the WP7 operating system, while it benefits from the huge payments it receives from Microsoft for its contributions and exchange of rights for use of intellectual property. Thanks to adoption of WP7, Nokia saves over $1 billion by investing a lot less in Symbian.

"At the highest level, we have entered into a win-win partnership,” said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia Corporation. “It is the complementary nature of our assets, and the overall competitiveness of that combined offering, that is the foundation of our relationship.”
With everything all nice and shiny in legal documents, the partners will now engage devs , carriers and consumers to join their ecosystem. Both companies have made substantial commitments and now we will start to see what comes of it.

Microsoft : Used Chris Walshie's method to force Nodo update? You are screwed.

Remember Chris Walshie 's infamous hack that let users force update to Nodo update? Read more about it here. Well, it's become a serious issue now for users who applied the hack.
The aftereffects of the hack? Well, the users got what they want, their wait was over, but Microsoft wasn't too happy with this. Chris ended up apologizing for this ( which is ridiculous, IMO - Microsoft failed to deliver on promise and users were desperate for the long awaited yet stuck update ). Now there were news that this would result in no further updates for the devices that have been forced updated to NoDo via this hack.
For those of you who did, we have a bad news for you :

Brandon Watson tweeted today few hours back, confirming the speculations :

@ our guidance remains - Walshed phones will not update past NoDo (specififcally build 7390)

I hope they come up with a solution soon enough because a device with support for no further updates is no more useful than a piece of junk. We will update this as soon as we get more information on this.

Fling Soft Releases Movie-streaming App Movie Vault for Windows Phone 7

Movie Vault was launched today by Fling Soft for Windows Phone 7. The app can stream over one thousand classic movies over Wi-Fi and 3G without additional charges. Initially released in Fall 2010 for iOS where it was listed in the 'New And Noteworthy' section and later in the 'Essential Apps for Movie Lovers' by Apple, it was also launched on Roku where it has been in the Top Paid Channel for over 20 weeks.

The app features the standard intuitive Windows Phone UI, with movies categorized by genres and also supports searches. Every movie has a direct IMDB link and related information like reviews, ratings and summaries. It dynamically refreshes its content without forcing users to download an update for the app. "We felt that the next logical step was to make the leap to Android and Windows Phone 7, but we wanted to take the time and do it right," says Jeremy Krall, Fling Soft co-founder. "Most feature length video library applications require ongoing subscriptions. We wanted to remove that barrier and let our customers have access to a wide variety of content once they purchased the application."

The app is available on the Zune Marketplace and can be downloaded here.

Details for 4 Nokia's Windows Phones Spilled

After we reported that Nokia was working on the W7 and W8 based on the X7 and N8 hardware, Eldar Murtazin has detailed them plus 2 more Nokia handsets running Microsoft's Windows Phone OS. Nokia has dived straight into development of 'Chassis 2' type WP7 phones which are unrestricted from Microsoft's usual set of conditions on WP7 phones.

The first of these devices is the Nokia W7(based on the X7). It has a similar body as the X7, but will not have an AMOLED display, but the resolution will be WVGA and Qualcomm's QSD8250 chipset will be used. Its should be the Nokia's first WP7 device and and might be ready for release by Fall 2011. The second is the W8 which should have a 12 MP camera and will be the Nokia's flagship when its released. This variant will be targeting the high-end market, with a dual-core processor and Adreno 320 graphics. The design will be as different from the N8 as possible.

Another device will have the touchscreen QWERTY formfactor seen in Nokia's E6, which will come with some sort of subscriptions service for corporate users. The last will be a cheap touchscreen device whose USP will be its price. It will probably have a fixed focus camera to save on costs and should be released early next year.

These 4 are only the first wave of WP7 devices out of the 12 Nokia is going to release next year. With the Mango update and better hardware, Windows Phone seems to be getting better and better.

Stephen Elop caught using a Nokia ' Concept ' Windows Phone 7 device !

Twitter user @TimoRonkainen apparently was sitting next to Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, at an ice hockey event today and noticed him playing with a Nokia device running..surprise surprise.. Windows Phone 7.  Timo when asked to describe how the device looked like, he told me that it looks like :

Yes, it's the same concept design that Nokia promoted during the Windows Phone 7 announcement in their blog. What's intriguing is that Nokia concept phones are you know - concept. They never reach the consumers but the device looks feasible, unlike most of the Nokia concept phones, and if Stephen Elop is playing with it publicly, then it might be worth giving attention too and might just see this for sale some day in near future. Nokia W7, W8 and now this - I think we are going to see a lot of Nokia devices running Windows Phone 7 next year.

HTC's 16 MegaPixel Windows Phone 7 device coming soon? (Video)

Pocketnow has posted a video on it's Youtube channel which is some sort of a sneak peak at the upcoming WP7 HTC device. We already know that HTC is coming up with a HD7S with improved screen, SLCD,  but the one mentioned ( nameless ) in the video has jaw dropping 16 Mega Pixel camera with 2 LED flashes. Don't believe me? Watch the video embedded below :

More mega pixels does not equals to better quality. We need better sensors not more megapixels, HTC. To be honest, HTC isn't known much for either the audio quality or camera specs - but guess they are working towards solving this problem soon. This probably is targeted to compete with the upcoming Nokia W8. Competition is good, can HTC outdo Nokia ? Drop in your comments.

First Nokia WP7 Phones to be named W7 & W8

People following technology news are all aware of the deal that Nokia & Microsoft announced. Well we are hearing that the first fruits of this deal is taking shape. Nokia is reportedly working on W7 based on X7 hardware and W8 based on the N8 hardware. I wish these phones could hit the market late this year, as per Industry rumours though Nokia plans to release their first WP7 phones in First Quarter 2012. Any takers on WP7+Nokia. Would you be compelled to buy it or have you been putting away Wp7 waiting for Nokia?

Connect to Hidden WiFi networks on Windows Phone 7 with HTC's Hidden Wi-Fi application

Well it's a know problem that your Windows Phone 7 device cannot connect to hidden networks, which is a huge problem for several people. HTC has just released an application called ' Hidden Wifi ' that let's you add 3 Wifi access points with hidden network names ( you do that by entering your network name or SSID )  to Wifi network list on your mobile after which you can connect to them just like any other Wifi network.

Do give it a shot and tell us if it works as described above :

Sadly, it's limited to HTC devices for now.

Exclusive preview of upcoming Rowi app update with Live tiles and Toast notifications!

We enlisted three best Twitter clients for Windows Phone 7. Rowi was one of them. Today I'll be telling more about it and what's in the next update of the app. The update will be live in day or two (already submitted and is being tested by Microsoft), but we have got some exclusive hands on the app and one thing that came into my mind was "Awesome !".

The lite versions remains pretty same, you have pivot (instead of panorama) for timeline, mentions and DMs and can configure them or add / remove few tabs or pivots. But the Direct Messages will have a look similar to the the text messaging we have on Windows Phone 7. Yes it has the Metro look which is nice and easy to use. Screenshot of the DMs conversation style:

There are few bug fixes too in the lite version.

Now the big one: The full-featured version has got Toast and Tile notifications. Yes, you have toast notifications for Direct Messages and Mentions and if you miss them, you have live tile to notify you. Glance and Go! Here are few screenshots of the toast and tile notification:

The toasts are similar to new text message toast notification and there are two counters for DMs & Mentions on the pinned live tile. You can even configure if you want these notifications (none or all).

Now you can see a small green mark in the screenshot which shows that all the systems involved in notifications Twitter, Microsoft's Push and Rowi are working fine and you will get the toast and tile notifications. But if it's Red, you can check the service status and find out where the problem is. After the MIX '11 announcements, notification system will be improved in Windows Phone 7 with live agents and we will hope that it will never go red.

The premium version will have all the goodies of the lite version plus the notifications minus ads. You can check other feature set in our previous post about the twitter clients. The updated app is intuitive because of its metro inspired interface. I expected these feature set from the official Twitter app for Windows Phone 7, but now we will have the Rowi. Comparing the new version of Rowi with the Twitter client Beezz which is already available in the marketplace, both have toast notifications, but the live tile is much more detailed in Rowi which is ambiguous in case of Beezz.

Thank you Hidden Pineapple (Erik Porter) for the exclusive preview of the app. Rowi will be a must have (and must pin) app for Windows Phone 7 and we will update whenever its up in the marketplace.

Microsoft has truly stepped up it's game and with the Mango update, it can truly compete with Android and iOS. Update is supposed to release this fall, but I am hoping for an October release. Don't forget to drop in your views.

Microsoft might give developers early access to Mango !

Brandon Watson during a Q&A round on #ch9live  made a lot of developers happy. Today, Mango update was announced which included a lot of stuff for developer ( 1500 + APIs, profilers, etc ) and now Brandon has stated that ' Microsoft is working hard to release Mango update for the developers early for testing '  which is a similar approach to what Apple does. Giving developers to test the OS before the consumers is a perfect way to iron out the bugs and get feedback from the developer community before it finally ships to consumers.

Update:  Brandon has tweeted it too now.

Promised we are committed to enabling early access. Still some things to solve.

Run your C# code on Windows Phone 7 with Pocket C#

C# programmers, this is something you might wanna download now. Being a ( C# newbie ) programmer myself, I often come up with ideas that might make my code better or sometimes I want to test a piece of code quickly, but sadly I can't carry my laptop everywhere with me. If you face a similar situation, Pocket C# is for you.

A C# development environment running in Windows Phone 7, with build and run functionality handled by an Azure-hosted web service. The C# editor has syntax highlighting, auto-indentation and code snippets to save typing on the little keyboard. There is also an MSDN search facility which reformats the content to be more phone-friendly. Code can be saved to the web service and accessed from your browser when you get to a computer.
Pocket C# is essentially a mobile IDE ( first of it's kind ? ) which remote compiles your C# code ( console application only) and saves the code on a web service so you can access it anywhere from a browser.

Here is the application in action :

At this moment, it is slightly limited but nevertheless filled with immense potential. The app is well worth the price. Hit the Zune link.

Three Best Twitter Applications for Windows Phone 7

Life without Twitter is hard to imagine these days. If you are new to Windows Phone 7, you'd be surprised to see a half baked application from Twitter since they have fantastic applications on competing platforms likes iOS and Android. Fear not, we have compiled a list of best 5 twitter applications for your Windows Phone 7 device.

1. BirdSong:  Birdsong is one of the first premium attention worthy twitter application on the marketplace and arguably the most visually pleasing twitter application across all platforms.

List of features :

  • Configurable timelines
  • Multiple accounts
  • Threaded conversations
  • Geo-tag tweets
  • High performance, infinite scrolling
  • Integrated picture viewing
  • Offline viewing
  • Map previews/thumbnails
  • Bing Maps integration
  • Share photos with TwitPic integration
  • Integrated web browser
  • Status Bar: unread message counts
  • Integrated with theme/accent color
  • Configurable timeline font size
  • Favorite tweets
  • Share tweets/DM via email or SMS
  • Delete tweets/DM

That is an impressive set of features. Besides the awesome UI - it's pretty stable too. But there are some annoyances like

  • Lack of live tile and toast notification ( coming in the next update! )
  • No Auto complete
  • No long press to bring a pop up menu
  • No Reply All option

Good to see that these things are already covered in the Feature request forum on Red Badger's website. The application costs 0.99 $ and with the constant updates and awesome twitter support - there is no reason to not buy this app. Birdsong is a complete value for money.
Prepare to be overwhelmed, hit the Zune Link.

Zune Download Link.

update : new version of BirdSong has Toast notifications and Live Tiles.

( note -  you can expect a detailed review of the next version of Birdsong, so stay tuned! )

2. moTweets:  moTweets comes in two flavors -  free ( add supported ) and premium ( which I believe is the right approach in the current situation ). Now moTweets, which has evolved from the  Windows Mobile generation,  is probably the most popular twitter client in the marketplace. It is an extremely feature rich client with few options to customize the UI.

Here are the list of features :

Use up to six (6) Twitter/Facebook accounts simultaneously.
• Upload pictures using your device’s camera or from the photo album.
• Add your location to your Twitter post using your phone's GPS.
• tinyurl.com, bit.ly, twitpic.com, yfrog.com and Plixi/TweetPhoto support.
• View Trends, Lists and Conversations.
• View user’s background in the user details screen.
• Live Tile displays your account image(s).
• Streams allow you to add and view multiple timelines including Search results and RSS feeds.
• View tweets near your location and view them on a Bing map.
• Three (3) skin themes to choose from.
• Image Wall displays all images from your timeline as well as ones you've uploaded.
• Translate Tweets, Search Twitter topics, locations and users with ease.
• ReTweet, Follow, Unfollow, Direct messages, RSS Feeds, Facebook Wall, Favorites and much more!

moTweets lets you add RSS feeds and a Facebook account, so that makes it a complete ' social ' client. But it primarily is a twitter client and it does it's job well. It's stable and a bit faster than Birdsong. One big advantage ( besides FB support ) is the live tile feature which notifies you of the number of unread incoming tweets.

It isn't perfect though,  the UI isn't really up to the mark but that's ' my ' personal taste. It doesn't have auto complete for username and ' Near Me ' stream doesn't work well. But when it comes to features, it overshadows BirdSong at this moment. It's been a  tough battle between these two since a long time now.

moTweets is definitely worth the 0.99 $ or you can get the add supported version for free.

3. rowi [ lite]: rowi [ lite] is the new kid on the block and it's blazing fast. rowi [ lite] is what twitter's native client should have been . rowi [ lite] blends perfectly with the OS. It's a a perfect example of a Metro UI  application.
The application isn't really heavy on features but does the job for most of the users. It has something special which nobody else does ( but will have soon! ) is the auto complete feature. The application is very stable and   scrolling is super smooth. Interface is clean which is an advantage over cluttered moTweets UI. It keeps location of your last read tweet when you reload the app which is a simple feature but non existent on most of the clients, strangely. Overall it is a pretty well made application. Sadly, stuff like live tiles and toast notification still isn't available. But will soon be available in the premium app.

rowi [ lite]  is free and we recommend you do check it out :

Zune download link.

update : Rowi has a premium application now with Toast notifications and Live Tile ( read review here )

Honorable mention :  Beez (  live tile and toast notification, no updates anymore so basically stale ) and Twitter ( native client, underwhelming but lot of potential ).

iPhone theme for Windows Phone 7 emulator

Tired of the plain and dull looking emulator ? Wish to change the look of  your emulator to resemble any mobile device ? No problem. Jeff Wilcox recently released his Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 emulator theme. It gets you closer to the experience of a real device, not technically of course but visually.

Taking clue from Jeff Wilcox's theme idea - Vangos Pterneas created an iPhone theme for Windows Phone emulator. I think it's pretty crazy and refreshing at the same time.

For more information on implementing the theme, click here.

I think I am going to try making a Mozart theme for my emulator. Creativity knows no bound - show us your cool emulators in the comments below.

Super Monkey Ball is now available on Xbox Live

It's been a long time coming, isn't it? Rumors and news about Super Monkey Ball coming to Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7. Well, it's finally here. With brands like Namco Bandai coming up with their own Xbox Live titles, SEGA certainly didn't want to be left behind. Super Monkey Ball came to iOS in August 2008 and proved to be a huge hit among mobile phone gamers. It was one of the first 3D games for iOS that fully utilized the accelerometer on the iPhone as well it's processing/graphical power. Other than that, it was the first 3D game to be launched with Apple's App Store back in 2008.

The game is available under the name "Super Monkey Ball" to download for $4.99 (that is Rs.265/- for our Indian readers) from the Zune Marketplace from today, i.e. Wednesday, April 6. There is also a trial version of the game, so you can try it out before buying.

We have just downloaded the trial version of the game, so we wouldn't be able to provide an in-depth review but you can take our word for it, this game is immense fun! A review will follow soon. Till then, you guys rock Super Monkey Ball on your Windows Phone 7 devices.

6 New XBL Games Coming within Six Weeks to Windows Phone 7 ( Includes Angry birds, Doodle Jump, Plants v/s Zombies and more! )

A twitter user ( @dsettinelli )  stumbled upon and shared this page titled 'Must Have Games for Windows Phone 7 ' via an email from Microsoft Australia. Before we begin, I have to say that after reading the line up of XBL titles - you will be pleasantly surprised.

Xbox.com has a special ' Must Have ' category for upcoming Windows Phone 7 games. They are releasing these games in a unique way called ' Six new games in six weeks '.

More on the ' Six new games in six weeks ' :

Delivering on the promise to bring a fresh catalog of fun, quality games on Windows Phone, we're proud to announce our exciting collection of Must Have Games -- six weeks of smash hit games you don't want to miss. No matter what kind of games you enjoy, the lineup of Must Have Games has something for you, delivering the biggest names in mobile games complete with Xbox LIVE Achievements, leaderboards, and more.

Lineup :

  1. Hydro Thunder Go
  2. Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1
  3. Plants v/s Zombies
  4. geoDefense
  5. Doodle Jump
  6. Angry Birds

For more on the above listed games, click here.

So what we have gathered at the moment is that these 6 games will be launched week by week. So a new XBL title will be launched every week. I am not sure if this is the correct order of release, because if it is - Angry birds fans will have to wait. Not a bad idea, this will create a lot of buzz before and after the launch of the above games.

Finally, we will have quality games from the powerhouses. Let me add to this, I have already played 3 of these games on my iOS device. WP7 is still waiting for that one exclusive that turns out to be a game changer for the platform, Microsoft studios - we are waiting.

Update :  Looks like Microsoft isn't releasing it anytime soon, more on this on WPcentral
Update II :  Xbox 's Youtube account recently uploaded a video of games in action. via enterconnected

WP7 Game Review: Fable: Coin Golf

The continent of Albion, the Hero of Oakvale, the Heroes' Guild. Ring any bells? Yeah, that's right! We are talking about the immensely popular medieval fantasy RPG video game franchise 'Fable' from Microsoft Game Studios developed by Lionhead Studios. The original Xbox exclusive that later made its way to other platforms including PC, Mac and even Xbox 360 in form of sequels is now on our new delicious smartphone operating system Windows Phone 7. Not as extensive or complex as the other versions but as a casual arcade game. We're sure that as Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 gets more popular, console quality 3D versions of Microsoft's popular franchises will eventually come but for now, we are gonna have to make do with what we got. So let's get to the review.

The game is developed by Lionhead Studios as we would expect any Fable game to be and published by Microsoft Game Studios. Along with that, Ideaworks Game Studio has also chipped in to provide support with the mobile version of the game.

We are going to review the trial version as we couldn't manage to procure the full version of the game. After going through the initial credits, we were presented by a prompt to purchase the full game but we are cheapskates like that. There are 7 levels in the trial version which don't take more than 20 minutes to complete.

As we tapped on the Play button, a level selection menu came up. On tapping the first level, the game started and a three fellows named Mark, Jim and Ben greeted us in the typical medieval fashion. It's a Fable game, after all. They were often quite hilarious in their conversations but we wouldn't spoil the fun for you just yet.

Unlike most of the touch-screen mobile games which are played in landscape mode, Fable: Coin Golf is played in portrait mode. That probably suits the nature of a the game a lot more than landscape mode. The gameplay involves a Hero Puck that we are supposed to guide through to the target beacon or The Pillar Of Light, as they call it. At the beginning of each level, we are awarded with bonus points that keep on decreasing with the number of tries we take to reach the target. So, the aim here should to shoot the Puck into The Pillar Of Light in as few shots as possible. The procedure is simple - you tap on the Puck, aim in the direction you want it to slide in release it. The game depends somewhat on physics as well. The gameplay resembles the game of Carom or Pool where we are supposed to aim and shoot at the target. Initially, it's only a matter of reaching the target with minimum possible shots/tries but later on, you are met with several hurdles in your path like tress and even the bad guys who bear striking resemblance to Orcs in another famous video game franchise, Warcraft. There are two power-ups in the later levels that help you cross these hurdles or blockages in your path in the form of two constantly moving round shaped shields. The first one, that is the green power up, also called "Woodman's Axe" helpls you to chop the trees that come in your way and the red power-up, that doesn't possess any fancy name aids in knocking down the bad guys. The Orc clones, remember? The gameplay is mostly about aiming and shooting. Felling trees, beating up bad guys and reaching the target doesn't mean the end of work for our hero. What's your worth in Albion if you are without gold coins? That's right, you cracked the case, Sherlock! There's also gold coins to be collected during the course of the game which means that you have to be creative with aiming and shooting the puck to grab all the coins. These gold coins can also be transferred to Fable III on your PC or Xbox 360 through your Xbox Live account.

There are four round-shaped on-screen virtual buttons in the game. The one on the extreme bottom left is the switch-view button i.e. it allows you to switch between the regular and the top view. The button just above that also serves a similar purpose, only by allowing you to change the vertical viewing angles to help with the aiming. The one on top-left is the restart level button and on the top-right is the options button, or the conventional touch-screen gaming buttons, as we would like to call them.

Coming to the graphics and the visual part, it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Fable: Coin Golf is one of those best looking games on Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7. It's not graphically intense like some of the iOS and Android games such as Rage HD, Infinity Blade or N.O.V.A. but it's beautiful to look at. The textures are really well done with really pretty level-design. With a simple game like this, there isn't much to talk about graphics, so we'll leave it right here. As for performance, the game works great on our HTC 7 Mozart and it should work equally well on other Windows Phone 7 devices.

The game has a plain old medieval music from those fairy tale movies and games. Nothing to brag about, but not bad either. The sound effects are really good with unique sounds for different actions in the game; the noise of the felling of tress and those Orc-like creatures making those disgusting sounds which are supposed to, you know, scare off our hero . Also, there's a huge applause at the end of each level. If you clear it, that is.

Overall, we are very impressed by Fable: Coin Gold and we thoroughly enjoyed playing the trial. It's not quite up there with the likes of Angry Birds and Tiny Wings but it's fun. There are 45 levels in the full version of this game which should be able keep one busy for hours. Now the thing that might be a huge "OMG" for a lot of people is that Microsoft Game Studios have gone nuts and bolts with the pricing of this title. It's a whopping $4.99. That's Rs.256/- for our Indian readers. Even with the 45 levels, that price isn't quite justifiable for an arcade game. So, we wouldn't recommend buying it just yet. Prices are bound to fall with high-quality titles coming to Windows Phone 7 platform at a rapid rate. It's also rumored that Angry Birds might hit the Marketplace really soon, so you should wait for that and see if this game gets any cheaper. To our readers who have bigger pockets - you know, the "buys-a-new-smartphone-every-month" kind of readers should go ahead and purchase the full game. After playing the trial, we can assure you that this isn't going to be a waste of your money, hard-earned or otherwise. For God's sake you own three smartphones! Buy the goddamn bugger!

That was our review of Fable: Coin Golf for WIndows Phone 7. Below is the Marketplace download link for the game :
