Microsoft earns 5 times more from Android than it does from Windows phone !
It's not just HTC, Microsoft is also suing every single Android manufacturer and aiming for $7.50 to $12.50 per device.
A rough estimate of the number of HTC Android devices shipped is 30 million. If HTC paid $5 per unit to Microsoft, that adds up to $150 million Android revenues for Microsoft.Read complete article here.
Microsoft has admitted selling 2 million Windows Phone licenses (though not devices.) Estimating that the license fee is $15/WP phone, that makes Windows Phone revenues to date $30 million.
So Microsoft has received five times more income from Android than from Windows Phone.
Note - $15 per windows phone is a working assumption, Asymco clarified this to me on twitter.
Try to put yourself in the place of OEMs, what would you think would be a logical step now that Microsoft has proved with mango update that Windows phones has the caliber to compete aggressively with iOS and Android, drop in your thoughts. It's a win win situation for Microsoft because they get paid anyways. Now they need to buck up, push next gen windows phone devices with improved hardware and sue more android manufacturers to disrupt the market. They have won me over with their OS anyways, which is quite obvious.

Customize and share your Windows Phone Online with MyWindowsPhone
Somehow still on the fence and not jumped to Windows Phone 7 ? Wanna check out the Metro UI from your browser ? Well, the awesomeness of the guys at XDA just keeps bursting forth. XDA member NePheus has developed a web-based app called 'myWindowsPhone' which you can use to administrate your own visual Window Phone. What that means is that you get a basic virtualisation of the Metro UI coupled with minor customization. The dev has said that its just a version one release so bugs might be present. Still its definitely worth a look.

ZTE bringing Mango powered Windows Phone devices to Europe in Q3
ZTE is China's no.2 handset maker and 4th largest in the world hence ZTE's push is extremely essential for Windows phone growth. Currently, ZTE is already working on Mango based smartphones and plans to keep the Q3 launch limited to Europe which is surprising. I would have loved to see these devices come pouring in Asia this year. Can we expect cheaper handsets coming from ZTE? We'll soon find out.

Microsoft working to bring Mango to developers before consumers
@0xMW We are working on a plan for DEVELOPERs to be able to get Mango for phones before we launch -- but for end-users: this fall.Yes, Microsoft is working to provide Developers an early access to Mango, which is a great idea since developers know their tech well and can act as great testers resulting in ironing out issues before the final release which is also beneficial for the company as well as consumers. Also, developers prefer device over emulators - who wouldn't ? So this sounds just about the perfect move to make developers oh so happy. Today, seems to be a fine day for developers, first the launch of beta tools and now this announcement.
Windows Phone 7.1 beta developer tools now available for download
- Microsoft Windows Phone Developer Tools 7.1 (Beta)
- Windows Phone Emulator (Beta)
- Silverlight 4 SDK and DRT
- Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0 Referesh Windows Phone Extensions
- Microsoft Expression Blend SDK Preview for Windows Phone 7.1
- WCF Data Services Client for Window Phone 7.1
#wp7dev - Time to dive deep into the SDK. Let's make some awesome apps !

More languages to be supported in Mango update, marketplace will expand to 35 countries
Mango will support languages including Brazilian, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Swedish.Marketplace will be available in 35 countries when the Mango update becomes available. The list of countries is mentioned below :
via Windows phone dev Blog
Another way we’re growing the Windows Phone ecosystem is by expanding geographically. With Mango, Windows Phone Marketplace will expand from 16 to 35 countries where both app submission and app purchase are supported locally.
Today | Adding with Mango |
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UK, USA | Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Korea (South), Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan |
In addition, Windows Phone Marketplace now supports app submission in China, Israel and Luxembourg. For those countries that are not yet locally supported by Marketplace, we continue to expand the Global Publisher Program we announced in early March. Today, developers in 69 Middle Eastern and African countries can submit applications via Yalla Apps. App Port supports 13 countries in East Asia. APPA Market is available to developers in 19 central European countries. And both Device7 and MTel service China.Phew. That's a lot of update.

Windows Live Messenger Integrated Into Windows Phone, Brings Together Text , IM , Facebook and Yahoo
In the deluge of Mango announcements coming out today, don't miss the Windows Live Messenger which has been deeply integrated into Windows Phone, as we covered earlier. Not an app, it is a part of the messaging hub itself. From the Windows Team Blog post :
Messenger has always been focused on helping you keep in touch with the people who matter most. We believe you should be able to choose the services you want to use and be able to access them from all of your devices, in a seamlessly integrated experience. And on your phone, that integrated experience should really just bring texting and IM together, so there’s only one place to go when you want to quickly chat with someone.
- Choose the services you want – More than 300 million people actively use Messenger to connect to people every month. The vast majority of those Messenger users are also members of other services like Facebook and Yahoo, where they also have connections they build and deepen every day. Because of this, we’ve steadily connected Messenger to other services so that you can use Messenger to sign in to the services you choose and chat with who you want.
- Access them from all your devices – Similarly, Messenger has been available for many years on a wide range of devices, using applications built both by Microsoft and through our broad partner program. In addition to the classic Messenger desktop programs for the PC and Mac, Messenger is built into the web on Hotmail, Skydrive, and various 3rd party sites throughout the world. Also, Messenger applications are available for most mobile phones and mobile operators around the world, including Windows Phone 7, iPhone, Android, Blackberry OS, Nokia Symbian, Samsung Bada, and many more.
- In a beautiful experience that brings text messaging and IM together – We love that Messenger already helps people access the services they want, from the devices they choose, but we’ve also heard you asking for a seamless, built-in Messenger experience on your Windows Phone. When you’re on your phone, you want one convenient place that lets you chat with all your contacts, so IM should be seamlessly integrated into how you already use text messaging.
Together with the Windows Phone team, we’re proud to announce that the next release of Windows Phone will come with a seamless, built-in texting and IM experience powered by Windows Live Messenger. Today, Andy Lees, Achim Berg, and Joe Belfiore announced the next release of Windows Phone, code named Mango, designed from the ground up to be the world’s best phone for connecting to and sharing with people, on your terms. As a key part of that promise, we’d like to show you some of what the integrated Messenger experience will offer:
- It’s not an app—it’s built into the Messaging hub – The hub experiences like Messaging, People, and more on Windows Phone are a powerful way to connect and share on your terms. On Windows Phone Mango release, Messenger is a built-in part of the Messaging hub, making it easier and faster to access in the most intuitive place. There’s no app to download and no separate experience to navigate.
- Messenger chat – Chat comes with all the best features of classic Messenger like IM and presence, emoticons, and MPOP (multiple points of presence, meaning you can be online in Hotmail and on your phone at the same time). Just click on the Messaging hub and your friends’ list, personal presence, and more are right at your fingertips. It works seamlessly with any other Messenger experience your friends are using, whether it’s on the PC, in Hotmail, or on their other devices.
- Connected services, starting with Facebook Chat – If you’re one of the more than 25 million people who’ve already connected Facebook to Windows Live, then you’re all set to use Facebook Chat from the new Windows Phone. If you haven’t yet, just quickly connect it from your phone and you’re good to go.
- IM and SMS in one easy place with seamless switching – The Messaging hub is one easy place for your IM and SMS chat threads and conversation history, which appear in one simple list. When you start a new thread, Windows Phone automatically picks the richest service for you to chat with your friend.
For example, if we’re both online in Messenger, it will use Messenger IM so that we can share rich photos and more, but if we’re Facebook friends or just have each other’s phone numbers, it will automatically select the right service for our conversation. Of course, you can always choose (and easily switch to) the service you want to use for any given conversation based on presence, network availability, cost, and personal preferences.
- Photo sharing locally or from the cloud – As you IM, you can easily insert photos into your conversation to bring it to life. Take a new photo right now to show the smile on your face or the quirky scene across the street, pick from the camera roll on your phone, or share from any of your albums on SkyDrive or Facebook.
- Group chat – Since Messenger is about friends and families, we also wanted to make sure you can connect in groups.
- Voice to text – Say what you want to say in your own voice (and avoid texting while driving). The Messaging hub comes with built-in voice recognition, letting you speak your next message whether you’re using IM, SMS, or both.
Once again, we couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming release of Windows Phone, which will be the world’s best phone to connect and share with your people on your terms. This makes it the best phone for the 300 million Messenger users around the world. Windows Phone Mango release provides a seamless, built-in chat and messaging experience powered by Messenger, building upon our continual efforts to let you choose the services you want, to access them from all of your devices, and to do it from beautifully integrated experiences that work the way you do.
We are covering everything Mango and you can follow the ticker here.

Mango update officially unveiled, coming to devices this fall!
More from the Windows Phone Blog :
Hundreds of new features
Mango, which will be available this fall, includes hundreds of new features and improvements organized around three key themes: easier communications, smarter apps, and the Internet. Andy will cover these in greater detail, but here are the highlights:Easier communications
The next version of Windows Phone keeps pace with the many different ways people connect and share—whether its calls, texts, emails, IMs, tweets, check-ins, or posting tagged photos or status updates. Some of the new features include:- Threads. Switch between text, Facebook chat, and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation.
- Groups. Group contacts into personalized Live Tiles to see the latest status updates and quickly send a text, email or IM to the whole group, right from the Start screen.
- Deeper social network integration. Twitter and Linked In feeds are now integrated into contact cards. There’s also built-in Facebook check-ins, and new face detection software that makes it easy to quickly tag photos and post to the web.
- Linked Inbox. See multiple email accounts in one linked inbox. Conversations are organized to make it easy to stay on top of the latest mail.
- Hands-free messaging. Built-in speech-to-text and text-to-speech support enables hands-free texting or chatting.
Smarter approach to apps
Windows Phone will challenge the way people think about apps. Mango brings improved app notifications and updates on the Start screen. Apps are also more integrated in search results and hubs. Highlights include:- App Connect. See apps in search results and hubs such as Music + Videos and Pictures. App Connect works with Marketplace, so results include both apps already on your phone and new apps to download.
- Improved Live Tiles. Live Tiles are more dynamic and can hold more information—making it easier to get real-time info from apps without having to open them.
- Multitasking. Apps can now run in the background while preserving battery life and performance. You can also quickly switch between open apps.
Go beyond the browser
Mango packs a mobile version of Internet Explorer 9 and leverages built-in phone capabilities like location awareness and the camera to supply more relevant search results and local info and suggestions. Highlights:- Internet Explorer 9. The power of a PC-browser plus support for HTML5 and hardware-accelerated graphics.
- Bing. Bing on Windows Phone offers more ways to search the web with voice and music search and Bing Vision, which uses your phone’s camera to look up product info.
- Local Scout. Provides hyper-local search results and recommends nearby restaurants, shopping and activities in an easy to use guide powered by Bing.
- Cards. Handy summaries of relevant info from Bing (including related apps) for products, movies, events or place you search for.
